'Papuan Batik', The Unique Culture of Papua

Rafifatun Nabilah N - Papuan Batik is typical clothing from the Papua region. It also developed apart from the Papua region itself. Papuan Batik began to develop around 1985, the motifs that developed were a combination of two cultures between Papua and Pekalongan. Pekalongan is a Javanese ethnic group that produces batik combined with a Papuan ethnic group that is rich in decorative variations which are developed as batik motifs. Papuan batik, the result of a combination of two cultures, is also known by another nickname, namely: Batik Port Numbay. Papuan batik is unique in terms of its motifs, because it was developed from the rich culture and unique nature of Papua.

Papuan Batik motifs that are well known include:

Tifa

The Tifa motif has a meaning that living humans must have the strength to ward off their enemies, this can be obtained by gathering or unitingTamba Ukir

The Patchwork Motif, visually, this motif depicts the richness of traditional decoration owned by various tribes in Papua, meaning that uniting will increase strength and beauty, complement each other, patch each other up in living together, so as to be able to solve various existing problems. Problems are like diseases that can cause various disorders in society and disintegration of the nation

Betel Nut

The areca nut motif is inspired by the betel nut which has become part of the culture of eating betel in Papuan society. This motif was created so that Papuan batik wearers continue to remember the tradition of eating betel in Papua.
