Palembang, Earth of Sriwijaya

 


Palembang is the second largest city in Sumatra after Medan. Palembang is known as "Earth of Srivijaya". Palembang is also known as the "City of Pempek".

Palembang people are of Malay descent and use the Malay language which has been adapted to the local dialect which is now known as Palembang Malay. The people of Palembang consist of Chinese, Arab and Indian descent. Palembang has several areas that are characteristic of the community, such as Kapitan village and al Munawwar village, Assegaf village, al Habshii village, Kuto Batu, 19 Ilir Jamalullail village and Sungai Alawiyyin Bayas 10 Ilir village which are inhabited by Arab communities.

Palembang has a number of tourist attractions that you must visit such as the Great Mosque of Mahmud Badaruddin I Palembang, Kuto Besak Fort, Ampera Bridge, Kambang Iwak Family Park, Punti Kayu Tourism Forest, Archaeological Park of Sriwijaya Kingdom, Tengkurep State Museum, Cheng Ho Palembang Mosque, Kapitan Village, al Munawwar 13 Ulu, Jakabaring Sport City (JSC), and others.

 The city of Palembang also has various arts including Dul Muluk, dances such as Gending Srwijaya which is performed as a welcoming guest and Tanggai as a wedding dance. Regional songs such as Melati Karangan, Dek Sangke, Cuk Mak Ilang, Pempek Lenjer, Dirut and Ribang Kembang. Palembang Malay traditional houses are Limas and Rakit. Palembang has the world's best textile fabric called Songket. Palembang also has a festival every year called the "Sriwijaya Festival" which is held in June to commemorate Palembang's anniversary, there are also a bidar festival and boat decorating competition to celebrate independence days, as well as festivals to commemorate the Hijri New Year, the month of Ramadan and the New Year.

Palembang is famous for its special food, namely pempek, even though there are many other foods that are no less delicious, such as tekwan, model, pindang catfish, laksan, celor noodles, burgo, lakso, tempoyak, maxubah cake, eight jam cake, and srikayo cake. Palembang has also been awarded the Adipura Award for several consecutive terms.
