The Night of First 'Suro'

Indonesia is a nation of many islands, and this is what makes Indonesia rich in a variety of traditions and cultures. Each region has its own interesting and cultural tradition.
Though time has developed, the traditions of each region are still guarded and kept for generations to come.

Some areas also have a unique tradition that still prevails. One of them is The Night of First Suro is one of the traditions on the sacred moon, it is based on the beliefs of the people of Java Island.

This tradition has been carried out for generations. The purpose of the implementation of this ritual or ceremony is to ask for salvation and inspiration from the Almighty so as not to do bad things during the sacred month as the Javanese people feel that the month is a sacred time to improve themselves about various things, namely about expressing gratitude to the Almighty, evaluation of all sins throughout the year that has passed.

The Night of First Suro is coincided with the first Islamic Month, Muharram. The Javanese community will perform some rituals on the night of one suro like meditation, tirakatan, ruwatan, and kirab.
